Barkhad Abdi Moved Back to Minneapolis, But He Never Left Hollywood. The Somali-born, Minnesota-launched actor has quietly been building a rock-solid career after blowing up in 'Captain Phillips. ' Now he wants to write and direct movies about refugees, Minnesotans, and himself.
He's supported himself as an actor ever since the Oscar nomination and is happy to clear up reports that claimed he was so broke after Captain Phillips that he went to work in a Minneapolis mobile phone store owned by his brother.
Acting career. Abdi and three other actors were chosen from more than 700 participants at a 2011 casting call in Minneapolis. According to the casting director, the four were selected because they were the chosen ones, that anointed group that stuck out.
Incarcerated on piracy charges. Sentenced to 33 years and 9 months imprisonment. Currently located at Federal Correctional Institution, Terre Haute, to be released 20 June 2038. Muse was portrayed by Somali-American actor Barkhad Abdi in the 2013 film Captain Phillips, a dramatization of the hijacking.
