He is best known for playing Bernard Woolley in popular British television comedies Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister, and Oscar Blaketon in the long-running ITV police drama Heartbeat. Fowlds died at the hospital in Bath, Somerset on 17 January 2020 at age 82, from heart failure and sepsis caused by pneumonia.
After a near-fatal heart attack in Series Seven which forced his retirement from the police force, Blaketon became proprietor of the Aidensfield Post Office but that did not last long because the writers found this difficult to tie in to the plots.
His autobiography, A Part Worth Playing, was published in 2015. He died at Royal United Hospital in Bath on 17 January 2020 aged 82 from complications of heart failure and sepsis, which had followed pneumonia.
Fowlds was married twice; first to Wendy Tory and then later to Blue Peter presenter Lesley Judd. He is survived by sons Jamie and actor Jeremy.
