Knotts died at age 81 on February 24, 2006, at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles from pulmonary and respiratory complications of pneumonia related to lung cancer. He underwent treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the months before his death but returned home after reportedly feeling better.
In 1999, the notoriously shy and private Knotts published his autobiography, Barney Fife and Other Characters I Have Known. Knotts died of lung cancer on February 24, 2006, at the age of 81, in Los Angeles, California. He was survived by two children, Karen and Thomas, from his first marriage to Kathryn Metz.
While his final words were not recorded, Knott's Daughter, Karen Knotts, recalls having to leave the room to laugh out loud. Long-time friend and co-star Andy Griffith was also at Knott's bedside during his final moments. Griffith gave Knotts words of encouragement, saying “Jess (Don's real name), breathe.
In reality, Knotts enlisted in the United States Army after graduating from Morgantown High School and spent most of his service entertaining troops. After performing in many venues, Knotts got his first major break on television in the soap opera Search for Tomorrow where he appeared from 1953 to 1955.
