Death. Caesar died on February 12, 2014, at his home in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 91, after a short illness.
American comedian Sid Caesar pioneered the television variety-show format in the 1950s. He was perhaps best known for the programs Your Show of Shows (1950–54) and Caesar's Hour (1954–57).
Caesar was born in Yonkers, New York, youngest son of Max Caesar and his wife Ida Raphael, Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire who ran a restaurant. Caesar would wait on tables and learned to mimic the accents, something he would use throughout his career.
Caesar also was known for his furious temper and strength. He was known to punch through walls and tear sinks from their moorings. He once punched a horse — a gag Brooks paid homage to in Blazing Saddles. And after one writing session, he dangled Brooks from an 18th-floor hotel room window.
His teachers, interviewed at the time of his early television success, remembered a completely unexceptional child. “Sid Caesar was one of the dumbest pupils I ever had,” one teacher said. He took up weight lifting.
