Alan Bennett is most famous for the plays The History Boys (2004) and The Madness of George III (1991) and the tv series 'Talking Heads'. Was The Lady In the Van a true story? The Lady In the Van is based on the real-life story of Miss Shepard and her relationship with Alan Bennett.
WB Yeats, who rejected a knighthood, told a friend: “I do not wish anyone to say of me, 'Only for a ribbon he left us. '” Bennett felt that accepting one “would be like wearing a suit every day of your life”.
It's hard to believe but today the great man of letters is 90 years old. I like to think of the ten-year-old Alan with his school homework in the Leeds Reference Library, sitting alongside Barry Cryer, who was a year younger. They remained good friends, right up to Barry's death in 2022.
