In 18th-century England, House of Commons member William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) and his close friend and a future prime minister, William Pitt (Benedict Cumberbatch), begin a lengthy battle to abolish Great Britain's slave trade.
The scene where William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) sings Amazing Grace at the card house was sung by Gruffudd at that moment. In the last several takes, a playback was used, but it is Ioan singing. Director Michael Apted had no idea whether or not Gruffudd could actually sing.
The hymn ''Amazing Grace'' was inspired, in part, by its author's real life experiences of receiving God's grace despite having done terrible things, such as participating in the Atlantic slave trade. The hymn is also about the universal idea of redemption, which is why it has become so popular.
