Amazing Grace is a 2006 biographical drama film directed by Michael Apted, about the abolitionist campaign against the slave trade in the British Empire, led by William Wilberforce, who was responsible for steering anti-slave trade legislation through the British parliament.

The scene where William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) sings Amazing Grace at the card house was sung by Gruffudd at that moment. In the last several takes, a playback was used, but it is Ioan singing. Director Michael Apted had no idea whether or not Gruffudd could actually sing.
The hymn ''Amazing Grace'' was inspired, in part, by its author's real life experiences of receiving God's grace despite having done terrible things, such as participating in the Atlantic slave trade. The hymn is also about the universal idea of redemption, which is why it has become so popular.
