Sethe and her daughter (Kimberly Elise) endure living with the spirit for 10 more years, until an old friend, Paul D. Garner (Danny Glover), arrives to run it out. After Garner moves in, a strange woman named Beloved (Thandie Newton) enters their lives, causing turmoil.
Jonathan Demme's adaptation stays remarkably true to the novel, and though critics celebrated it, the three-hour film did not find commercial success at the box office. The film diverges from the book mainly in the way it focuses on Sethe's experience in the present.
During the commotion, Beloved disappears completely and Sethe, freed from Beloved's grip, becomes permanently bedridden. Some months later, Paul D encounters Denver at the marketplace. She has become a confident and mature young woman.
