Reports at the time suggested that as Max's contract came to an end, bosses decided not to extend it and to write out both the character and Max. A cast member had revealed in February that Max was no longer filming, while the BBC soap has not revealed if the character will be recast again.
Casting and characterisation. Having previously appeared as a baby and a toddler, Ben returned to EastEnders in 2006 played by child actor Charlie Jones. Jones was cast alongside Megan Jossa, who would play his cousin Courtney Mitchell. While Ben is partially deaf, Jones is a hearing actor.
Ben Mitchell has to be the most recasted role in soap history. A total of six actors have played the EastEnders legend since he first arrived on screens in 1996 and we all have our favourites.
Ben was first played by Matthew Silver from 1996 to 1998 with Morgan Whittle taking over the character from 1999 until 2000. After a soap absence, Ben returned to EastEnders in 2006 with the role being recast to actor Charlie Jones, who portrayed the character until 2010.
With him facing time in prison for credit card fraud, Ben panicked he was going to be taken away from young daughter Lexi less than a year on from her mother Lola Pearce's death. Ritchie explained Ben faced time in prison in the US, away from Lexi and his family.
