Loughlin turned down lead role of Emmeline in The Blue Lagoon. Tatum O'Neal turned down the role of Emmeline. Based on the 1908 novel of the same name, Blue Lagoon followed the lives of Richard (Atkins) and Emmeline (Shields), two cousins who are shipwrecked on an island as children and later become lovers. Atkins was 18 and Shields was 14, respectively, when they filmed the drama, which became a breakout role for Shields.
In the 1980 film Blue Lagoon, Brooke Shields walked in shallow trenches because she was 177.8 centimetres tall, while her co-star, Christopher Atkins, stood at just 167.6 centimetres.
The movie not only hit headlines when it was released, it led to a government inquiry and Brooke Shields was called to testify before the United States Congress. The young actress confirmed that body doubles had been used for any naked scenes and her breasts were always covered by her hair or clothing.
