Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr. was born on 16 April 1889 to Hannah Chaplin (née Hill) and Charles Chaplin Sr. His paternal grandmother came from the Smith family, who belonged to Romani people. There is no official record of his birth, although Chaplin believed he was born at East Street, Walworth, in South London.
In September 1952, Charlie Chaplin was on his way to Europe to promote his film Limelight when he learned that the USA had revoked his visa. The Chaplin family needed a new address in Europe and, on the advice of Charlie's half-brother Sydney, they visited Switzerland. The family moved in on 6 January 1953.
All of Chaplin's films up to and including The Circus (1928) were silent, although many were re-issued with soundtracks. City Lights (1931) and Modern Times (1936) were essentially silent films, although they were made with soundtracks consisting of music and sound effects, with talking sequences in the latter film.
A 54-year-old Charlie Chaplin married Oona O'Neill, the 18-year-old daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill, on this date in 1943. Despite their age difference, the couple had eight children and remained married until his death in 1977.
