On Thursday, a Denton County jury sentenced John Franklin Howard to life in prison for hiring someone to try and kill his wife in 2012. That same jury unanimously found Howard guilty Tuesday after only two hours of deliberation.
He became a first base coach for the Seattle Mariners in 1987. Howard was the hitting and first base coach the New York Yankees from 1989 to 1993, the first base coach for the Mets from 1994 to 1996, and the bench coach for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 1998 to 1999.
At 6-foot-7, Howard was larger than life to the little kids who were Senators fans mostly because of him. Yesterday, he passed away at 87 years old after battles with health issues that included skin cancer that cost him part of his ear. He said it just made him look scarier to little kids.
Howard also lost his own seat of Bennelong at the election to Maxine McKew, becoming only the second prime minister to do so, after Stanley Bruce at the 1929 election. Following this loss, Howard retired from politics, but has remained active in political discourse.
When Howard was eligible for the Hall of Fame, he got only 1.4 percent of the writers' vote in 1979. With his galumphing rampages around the bases and outfield and his Tilt-a-Whirl strikeouts, he didn't look like Cooperstown to them. Howard is no Hall of Famer.
