FAQs
After the death of her uncle in 1826, she began to manage the estate and inherited it in 1836. She was very fond of exercise: her hobbies included walking, riding and shooting. Anne also played the flute. However, her masculine appearance and sometimes eccentric behaviour earned her the nickname of Gentleman Jack.
After Anne Lister died, Ann Walker inherited Shibden Hall and estate and lived there alone from 1841. However, she was not allowed to be resident there for long. In the interim, her sister Elizabeth had married Captain George MacKay Sutherland (1798 - 1847) in 1828 and moved to Scotland.
In line with Anne Lister's disregard for socially acceptable relationships, she succeeded in marrying Ann Walker in the form of a Church blessing, though the union was not a happy one. They travelled widely together, including a trip to Russia, which ended in Anne Lister's untimely death in 1840.
Anne Lister (1791-1840) is sometimes described as 'the first modern lesbian'. A successful woman entrepreneur and landowner, she kept an extensive diary, partly in code, running to four million words.
Diary of Anne Lister, 10 Mar 1834 - 21 Mar 1835. Material sourced from West Yorkshire Archive Service. Further reproduction without permission is prohibited. Lister was known as Gentleman Jack or Fred due to her masculine appearance and interest in business, not conforming to gender roles of the time.
