Plot Synopsis by AsianWiki Staff © In 1979, 42 patients at Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital killed themselves and the hospital director went missing. Rumors and strange stories about the now abandoned Gonjiam Mental Hospital abound.
Ha-Joon is then strangled to death. Regaining consciousness, Seung-Wook finds himself strapped to a wheelchair. The wheelchair slowly rolls to Room 402 by itself, and Seung-Wook cries out for his teammates.
He sees various ghosts and hears gibberish before he is pulled into 402. The live broadcast fails with viewers dropping and claiming the broadcast was fake. In the epilogue, the dish of holy water starts to boil, implying holy water has the effect to repel ghosts.
Gonjiam is almost completely devoid of violence or gore, earning its chills from impressively creepy locations and convincing performances of a largely unknown cast. Fresh score. Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is the real deal. Deeply unsettling and unrelentingly scary, it is a film that must be seen.
