As a collegiate player, Payne was a three-year starter at Auburn who was selected as a team captain in his senior season. He went on to play one year of professional basketball in the United Kingdom for the Sheffield Sharks.
Payne was born Allen Roberts in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, the eldest son of Allen Roberts and Barbara Reeves.
Payne died in Malibu, California, of congestive heart failure on December 6, 1989, aged 77.
Needless to say, Allen Payne's career took the opposite direction as he had a pretty affluent career after the film. He went on to star in The Cosby Show, Jason's Lyric and A Vampire in Brooklyn. Most recently, he is known for starring in Tyler Perry's House of Payne, which aired from 2006 to 2012.
