FAQs
The film chronicles the life of a working-class Ulster Protestant family from the perspective of their nine-year-old son Buddy (Jude Hill) during The Troubles in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Hill made his feature film debut in Kenneth Branagh's Belfast. The film's story is told mostly through the eyes of Hill's character Buddy, described by Jeanette Catsoulis of the New York Times as a bright, cheerful 9-year-old and a fictionalized version of Branagh himself.
🎥 Although the movie Belfast is not a true story, it was heavily inspired by writer and director Kenneth Branagh's real life. ⛪ Buddy is a a fictionalized version of Branagh. The Troubles forced his Protestant, working-class family to leave Northern Ireland.
Belfast, Northern Ireland's capital city, is perhaps best known for the sectarian strife that took place here during the era of the Troubles, and as the birthplace of the Titanic (and many other ships that didn't sink). While these two claims to fame aren't too uplifting, Belfast's story is hardly a downer.
As you can see, west Belfast is mainly Catholic, in most areas over 90%. For many years, the Catholic population expanded to the southwest, but in recent years it has started expanding around the Shankill and into north Belfast. The east of the city is predominantly Protestant, typically 90% or more.
