Libya is a Mediterranean nation of Northern Africa with a population of roughly 6.4 million. 97% of the population identifies as Arab or Berber, more appropriately called Amazigh.
The country is best known for its ancient Greek and Roman ruins and Sahara desert landscapes.
The majority of Libyans are of Arab or mixed Arab-Berber descent. The Sunni branch of Islam is the official and nationally dominant political, cultural and legal force. Imazighen, who retain the Tamazight language and customs, are indigenous to North Africa and constitute the largest non-Arab minority.
The economy of Libya depends primarily on revenues from the petroleum sector, which represents over 95% of export earnings and 60% of GDP. These oil revenues and a small population have given Libya one of the highest nominal per capita GDP in Africa. $45.75 billion (nominal, 2023 est.) $182.7 billion (PPP, 2024 est.)
