Jeffries retired from acting in 2001 and his health declined in the following years. He died on 19 February 2010, at a nursing home in Poole, Dorset. He had suffered from vascular dementia for the last twelve years of his life. He was 83.
He served in the British Military during World War II where he was stationed at Burma (now Myanmar). An Associate Member of RADA. He made about 20 Ministry of Information films after the war. He retired from acting in 2001 after being diagnosed with vascular dementia.
The project was a poignant labour of love into which Lionel poured his longing for the happy childhood he had never had. The Jeffries household, though Roman Catholic, was a liberal one, in which gay showbusiness friends were welcomed.
Lionel Charles Jeffries (June 10, 1926 – February 19, 2010) was an English actor, screenwriter, and director who is known for his roles in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Camelot, The Railway Children, The Amazing Mr Bluden, First Men in the Moon, Two-Way Stretch, and The Trails of Oscar Wilde.
Jeffries found desk duty to be intolerable and was belligerent when Captain Donald Cragen still wanted to include her in staff meetings. She blamed Cragen for supporting the decision of the commission to take her off active duty. She eventually resigned and sued the department for discrimination.
