In 1973, Williams attained a full scholarship to the Juilliard School (Group 6, 1973–1976) in New York City. He was one of 20 students accepted into the freshman class, and Williams and Christopher Reeve were the only two accepted by John Houseman into the Advanced Program at the school that year.

He was able to completely embody his characters, while being entertaining every moment that he was on-screen. Williams studied for three years at College of Marin before leaving for the Juilliard School in New York, where he won a full scholarship and studied under John Houseman. From Juilliard, Williams returned to California to perform standup on the club circuit.
After Robin Williams died by suicide in August 2014, his widow, Susan Schneider Williams, would soon learn about a disease she had never heard of, but one that had haunted both of their lives. That disease is Lewy body dementia, with which the actor was diagnosed in October 2014 following an autopsy on his brain.
