After a brief unhappy marriage, Houston retired from Tennessee politics to live among Native Americans in what is now Oklahoma. Gradually easing back into politics, he migrated to Texas where he served as a delegate at the Convention of 1833.

In 1859, Houston won election as the governor of Texas. In this role, he opposed secession, and unsuccessfully sought to keep Texas out of the Confederate States of America. He was forced out of office in 1861, and died two years later in 1863.
Sam Houston is often referred to as the hero of Texas. He was a military hero in both the War of 1812, and in the war for Texas Independence. He served as president of Texas when it was a new Republic and he also became a governor when it became a state.
