FAQs
Actor–network theory (ANT) is a theoretical and methodological approach to social theory where everything in the social and natural worlds exists in constantly shifting networks of relationships. It posits that nothing exists outside those relationships.
Bruno Latour's actor-network theory is that all of the parts or actors in a system are equally important. For example, people who use a computer system should also be considered when analyzing a computer network because people are one of the vital parts of the network.
The theory is distinctive because it insists that networks are materially heterogeneous and argues that society and organization would not exist if they were simply social. Agents, texts, devices, architectures are all generated in, form part of, and are essential to, the networks of the social.
ANT usually follows the network-building strategies of a central actor. It stresses the mutual constitution and transformation of elements in the process, and the generation of social phenomena – agency, knowledges, institutions, power – as effects of network building.
