John Leslie “Jackie” Coogan, Jr.. Many years later, he became known as Uncle Fester on 1960s sitcom The Addams Family. In the interim, he sued his mother and stepfather over his squandered film earnings and provoked California to enact the first known legal protection for the earnings of child performers.
After the war, Coogan played bit parts in movies and television shows. In 1964 he was turned down for the role of Uncle Fester in “The Addams Family”. After getting the news, Coogan shaved his head, created his own costume and convinced the producers to give him the part.
After suffering from heart and kidney ailments, Coogan died of heart failure on March 1, 1984, at age 69, in Santa Monica, California. Coogan had a long history of heart trouble and hypertension and had previously suffered several strokes. He had been undergoing kidney dialysis when his blood pressure dropped.

The films differ from the television series in several ways, most significantly that Fester is Gomez's brother (in the television show, he was Morticia's uncle).
