Guillermo del Toro was not offered the full writer-director role he had performed in the previous films, and Ron Perlman, who had portrayed Hellboy, refused to return without del Toro's involvement. The project was turned into an R-rated reboot after Marshall was hired as the director and Harbour cast as Hellboy.
Perlman was the actor who starred in Guillermo Del Toro's original Hellboy movie (2004) and its sequel, Hellboy: The Golden Army (2009), which were released by Universal. However, he left the role after both films failed to even generate $200 million at the worldwide box office (respectively).
Hellboy was created for evil. He was supposed to initiate the destruction of the world. Instead, he chooses to rewrite his destiny, overcome his hardwired malevolence and save all of humanity.
