April 29, 1937 – At 83, William Hooker Gillette dies of a pulmonary hemorrhage.
Before his death in 1937, Gillette decreed that the property should not fall into the hands “of some blithering saphead who has no conception of where he is or with what surrounded.” In 1943, the state of Connecticut purchased the castle and grounds from Gillette's executors.
In 1882 he married Helen Nichols and had a highly successful marriage until she died in 1888 of complications from a burst appendix. The couple had no children, and Gillette never remarried.
Gillette is best known for adapting Sir Conan Doyle's stories to the stage, then later playing and perfecting the part of Holmes in more than a thousand performances. “Elementary, my dear Watson” was adapted from a line of Gillette's. The deerstalker hat was his invention.
