Why It Was Cancelled. Although the ratings for Wings were moderately successful for seven seasons, it ranked at #76 in the Nielsen ratings for its eighth season (tied with Almost Perfect, Chicago Sons and Temporarily Yours). After eight seasons and 172 episodes, Wings was cancelled in May of 1997.
At the sixth season finale, Helen is finally able to marry Joe. The writers originally had a different character in mind, written for Peri Gilpin, who would have played a woman of Greek heritage.
