Esther Williams died in her sleep on June 6, 2013, from natural causes, in her Los Angeles home. She was 91. She was cremated, and her ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean.

The final scene called for a 35-metre dive: Williams did it, but broke her neck in the process and spent the next seven months in a body cast.
Throughout her time at MGM, Williams participated in many spectacular swimming numbers. She took on synchronized swimming sequences and also performed dangerous stunts. She broke her neck after performing a 115-foot dive for Million Dollar Mermaid, needing to recover in a body cast for seven months.
