Historically, white actresses such as Claudette Colbert, Vivien Leigh, and, most famously, Elizabeth Taylor have portrayed Cleopatra. The thinking during Hollywood's Golden Age seemed to be that kohl eyeliner and a black wig was all it took to transform any white woman into the Queen of the Nile.
The controversy was ignited by the casting of a Black actress, Adele James, to play the titular queen; critics claim that James' casting is historically inaccurate, and have labelled it “appropriation.” Ironically, Cleopatra has often been played by non-Egyptian actresses in the past, most famously by Elizabeth Taylor.
