The people who play Deaf characters in CODA are indeed Deaf. Marlee Matlin, who played the mom in CODA, Jackie Rossi, recorded an opinion piece that was released just a day or two before the Academy Awards, in which she says deafness is not a costume that anyone can put on and take off.
Matlin lost almost all of her hearing when she was 18 months old. She made her stage debut in a 1974 production of The Wizard of Oz staged by the Children's Theatre of the Deaf and sponsored by the Center on Deafness, then in Des Plaines, Illinois, and she continued to act with that theatre for the next several years.
But CODA was Jones' first time singing on the big screen. “I'm always kind of singing around the house and things, but I'd never done anything at the same level that was required for CODA. I'd never sung songs like that before,” Jones said.
