Gangubai, 16, and her husband Ramnik Lal, 26, fled to Mumbai and got married. Within a few days of the marriage, her husband sold her in a kuntankhana (brothel) for ₹1,000. Reluctantly, Gangubai started working as a prostitute. In a short time, Gangubai became the head of some kuntankhanas.
The film stars Alia Bhatt in the title role, alongside Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa, Jim Sarbh and Ajay Devgn. The film is about Gangubai Kothewali, whose life was documented in the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai written by S. Hussain Zaidi.
Born into an affluent family in Kathiawad, Ganga Harjivandas (Alia Bhatt) aspired to become a Bollywood actress. At the tender age of 16, she fell in love with Ramnik Lal (Varun Kapoor). They elope (Ramnik convinces Ganga not to tell her parents that she is going to Bombay.
In the movie, Alia Bhatt will be seen playing the titular role while actor Vijay Raaz will essay the role of Gangubai's rival Razia Bai (a transwoman).
