FAQs

Unlike in many long-running mystery series, George's characters grow and change; sometimes gradually, sometimes (as in “With No One As Witness,” in which Lynley's beloved wife, Helen, was suddenly murdered mid-book) in an instant.
Helen even accompanies Lynley to question a suspect in the murder of Dermot Finnegan. Incidentally Emma Fielding played Helen in the pilot. So three people have played Helen in the run of Inspector Lynley. The murder victim in this episode is Finnegan, a forensic psychologist who gets blown as he starts his car.
The protagonist, Detective Inspector Thomas Tommy Lynley, 8th Earl of Asherton (Nathaniel Parker), who is assigned to Scotland Yard, finds himself paired with Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers (Sharon Small).
Helen, unable to cope with the loss of the baby and her deteriorating relationship with Lynley, decides to leave him. Lynley throws himself into solving the case. With Havers' help, he confronts the murderer - Tessa Jellicoe, who'd been having a relationship with Finnegan's wife Grace.
At the age of 19 months, Helen became deaf and blind as a result of an unknown illness, perhaps rubella or scarlet fever. As Helen grew from infancy into childhood, she became wild and unruly.
