When Kayako came home, Takeo attacked her and sprained her ankle. Kayako tried to escape the house by crawling down the stair to the door, but Takeo grabbed her by her long hair, snapped her neck, and crushed her throat, so the only sound she could make was a croaking noise.
Kayako Saeki (Takako Fuji), a young Japanese woman, is unhappily married to Takeo Saeki (Takashi Matsuyama). She becomes obsessed with Peter Kirk (Bill Pullman), an American college professor working in Tokyo. She writes about her feelings for him in a diary.
Although her background is significantly different between them, in all versions Kayako is an onryō - the furious, spiteful spirit of a Japanese housewife who was brutally murdered by her husband, Takeo, after his discovery of her secret feelings towards another man.
Kayako is reported to have been 28 years old when she was murdered in the Ju-on series. She is 30 at the time of her death in the The Grudge.
Kayako's fictional history alternates slightly between continuities, but all depict her as the very attractive yet unfortunately vengeful ghost of a woman killed by her husband, Takeo, along with their son Toshio, in a murder–suicide that happened after he came to believe she was having an affair.
