Leslie Ash endured a year of ridicule over her swollen lips - or the 'trout pout', as it became known.
TV star Leslie Ash has said that her life will “never ever be the same as it was” following an infection two decades ago. The actress, 64, contracted methicillin-sensitive staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), similar to other bacterial infection MRSA, in hospital.
She was discharged after a few days, but was readmitted after losing all feeling in her legs. In June 2004 while she was still in hospital, it was announced that a Staphylococcus aureus infection might have rendered her permanently unable to walk. In January 2007 Ash confirmed she was suing the hospital.
But why the clamour for swollen lips? Perhaps because fuller mouths are associated with youth and fertility. Lips tend to thin from around the age of 30, with the effects becoming more obvious from the late 30s, especially on smokers.
Dermal fillers can be used to add fullness to the lips; however, if this is done with poor technique, or too much filler is used, then the lips will project forward, resulting in a 'trout pout'.
