The opera glove, at this point, has a bit of a misnomer. As of late, celebrities and luxury brands have propositioned the prim above-the-elbow accessory as an anywhere and everywhere-type of garment.
In popular culture, probably the best-known images incorporating opera gloves are those of Rita Hayworth in Gilda (1946) Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), Cinderella from Disney's 1950 film Cinderella and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Past generations wore them to protect their hands from the sun as well as the cold. A formal occasion such as opening night at the opera demanded them. Ladies often wore jewelry over them, although that could mean a larger ring size than over a bare finger.
Opera gloves. It has buttons at the wrist which allowed women to free their hands without completely taking off the glove for occasions such as eating. Wearing gloves was considered a mandatory form of etiquette in the Victorian times especially amongst the upper class.
