On June 25, 1906, millionaire Harry Thaw murdered famed architect Stanford White in a jealous rage over Thaw's actress wife, Evelyn Nesbit. The ensuing high-society trials (the first ended in a dead-locked jury) gripped the nation's headlines for more than a year.
But I was asked to pick only one trial: THE greatest trial of the twentieth century. That honor, of course, must go to the Monkey Trial of 1925, which considered whether Tennessee could prosecute John Scopes for teaching the theory of evolution in a public school science class.
