FAQs
Celebrity worship syndrome (CWS) or celebrity obsession disorder (COD) is an obsessive addictive disorder in which a person becomes overly involved with the details of a celebrity's personal and professional life.
It's been described as an obsessive-addictive disorder, though it's not a clinically recognized condition in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5). Like all parasocial relationships, celebrity worship syndrome can be considered a one-sided, nonreciprocal relationship.
This phenomenon is also known as the Celebrity Worship Syndrome or Celebrity Obsession Disorder (COD). Although it is not a recognized clinical entity in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), it is defined as a depressive and addictive disorder.
Make an effort to distance yourself from the celebrity by taking a break from social media, avoiding celebrity tabloids, and getting rid of objects that remind you of them. Invest more time in pursuing your interests and hobbies to distract you from your obsession.
Milder mania is more likely to be associated with positive outcomes, like increased productivity or greater feelings of optimism. However, the impulsive behaviors associated with a manic state can lead to substance abuse, unnecessary risks, or poor financial decisions.
