When I wrote Truss Rods Made Easy, I mentioned that Ovation, bowl-back guitars, without a regular sound hole, had to have their truss rods adjusted through an access port around the back.
Action/Truss Rod adjustment
- stick an allen key of the right size into the little hole in your headstock (or soundhole for acoustic).
- Clockwise to lower action, and counter to raise it.
- loosen strings.
You can use your strings as a straight edge by pushing them down to both the 1st and 14th frets simultaneously. Then the gap between the string and the 6th fret can be observed. A gap slightly thinner than a business card is about right. From this point, you can adjust to your own preference.
Keep in mind that most good necks usually require no more than half of a turn in either direction. Using the mark you made to note the original position of the rod, start with an eighth of a turn, re-tune the guitar and check the gap again.
