Gentle Ben (1967-1969) was a beloved television series about the Florida adventures of young Mark Wedloe (Clint Howard) and his black bear friend named “Ben.” The show famously opened with the black bear riding on an airboat through the Everglades.
The airboat, with the characters of Tom, Mark, Ellen, and Ben the bear riding it, was prominently featured in the show's opening credits. Dennis Weaver later recounted an incident where one of the bear actors, Hammer, capsized the airboat.
